continuing digestive issues almost 1 year after laparoscopic choelysystectomy

Jan of 2001 I had an emergency laparoscopic choelysystectomy. Ever since then (almost 1 year)I have had increased diarrhea and loose stools, sometimes accompanied by intense urgency or mild pain. This is something I can live with, but I would prefer to have more "normal" digestion. Is this continuation of symptoms something I should contact my doctor about or is it normal to have a permanent change in digestion?

Also, should I be checked for gallstones in the future or am I safe from recurrance?

I had my gallbladder removed in April of 2001 and continue to have the same symptoms you have mentioned. I have had numerous tests and procedures done, even ended up having an ERCP with Sphincterotomy done in November and ended up with Pancreatitis. Since the doctors couldn't "find anything" they have decided that I have IBS. They may be right and I may have IBS but I think there are other issues as well. I think you should atleast contact your doctor and see what they say. Best of luck to you and Happy New Year.

Don't know if any of this will pertain to either of you, but I got some interesting responses to my post of 12/30/01 "Does anyone with Crohn's Diseas have these symptoms?". Maybe some of the info there might be helpful to you?

I had my GB out about 8 years ago and can say the diarrhea and runnin after eating to the bathroom is kinda normal.  That is what happened to me and my mom anyway.  I can say, it does get better eventually.  Most drs wont give you any reason for this.  Yet i have found out it has something to do with when you have a GB, your bile hangs out in there,until you start eating something.  When you begin eating it drips into your stomach and helps digest your food.  Well, with no GB there, it dont drip anymore, it pours!  Which then gets acts like a laxative in your stomache.

I have found that taking caltrate (with the purple markings on the box) with a meal, for some reason that stops the diarrhea.  But you have to take it with every meal.  Then again, here i am 8 yrs later and i dont have that problem all the time anymore, just sometimes.  Havent put a finger on when or what it is i am eating, just happens whenever it wants.

I went from dr to dr over this, no one could find a thing or give me a reason why this started after removing my GB.  (other then telling me i had IBS)  I found it more helpful talking to others on messageboards with the same problem.
