congenital hepatic fibrosis and pregnancy

by pia, Jan 06, 2002 12:00AM
I have been diagnosed with congenital hepatic fibrosis 3 years ago.  I am asymptomatic, and my liver enzymes are normal although I have an enlarged spleen, hyper portal tension and a low platelet count.  I am 40 years old and I would like to get pregnant but I am concerned and unsure what the risks are for somebody with my condition.

hi pia,

Im a 34 year old who was diagnosed with Congenital hepatic firosis 14 years ago. I have had a liver bi-pass and my spleen removed 14 years ago. The bi -pass did not fully work and  i have lived with continuous oesophegeal bleeds since then .Two years ago I fell pregnant and continued with the pregnancy as my doctors told me i would be fine.I was not.. I had a major bleed at 21 weeks. I was very badly neglected in the hospital and the baby died over the course of 5 days as i lay in a ward bleeding. Unfortunatley I was very badly cared for so my outcome was a tragedy. I dont want to put you off..I think it is possible to have a child I just want to advise you be really careful and get a great deal of support and care..please take care I would hate to think someone would go through what i when through..good luck!!
