Getting Off PPI's (proton pump inhibitors) - Survey

by MLS, Feb 14, 2002 12:00AM
Hello,

I was just wondering?  Has anyone that reads this site that has barrett's esophagus gotten off the PPI's.  I have short segment 1 cm. barretts.  My GI doc says I can get off the PPI's.  I would appreciate any comments, success stories, etc.

Did your doctor tell you that you are not refluxing anymore or that you are refluxing bile in which case the PPIs dont help?

Neither, we just talked about the fact that I didn't like being on the PPI's and that after losing weight, not having reflux anymore (at least not up into the mouth which I always had )with dietary changes, etc.  that we could try going off the PPI's.  Loooking back on terrible habits over the last 15 years or so I can see lots of things that I didn't realize I was doing.  Overeating (always had reflux into mouth after overeating but noticed it wasn't as much of a problem if I exercises), I drank at least 15-20 oz. of pop or iced tea with my evening meal, drank pop all day or coffee, hardly any water, ate right up until bedtime and also ate really bad things before bed like pickles, raw potatoes and salt, tomatoes, banana peppers, (I always craved those things that were salty and since they weren't fattening I ate them.  Also ate crackers, pretzels, etc. that sat in my stomach all night long.  I did have a high stress job.  On weekends my husband and I would go out to socialize and have a few drinks thinking this would relax me but all it did was not allow me to sleep and then I always ended up being more tired and stressed out the next day.  I've done some serious lifestyle changes.  Hopefully this will help.  Do you have barretts?

MLS, I have the beginings of Barrett's. My endoscopy showed "minute focus of intestinal metaplasia" and "no dysplasia". I would like to go off my meds someday but I'm not sure if that can happen. I only started having mild to moderate heartburn 1 year ago. Thank goodness I had it checked out.
