occult blood in stools

I had a test for blood in the stools because of abdominal pain. Had both an endoscopy and colonoscopy and some other tests and blood work.  Everything was normal.  Still getting the pain though. Now my question.  I mentioned to my gastroenterologist that my gums often bleed.  He said that the blood from the bleeding gums could eventually end up in the stools and show up on a hidden blood test.  Anyone hear of this or know if this is true?   Thanks for any help.

My ordeal started over 3 years ago.  I was on Prednisone for poision ivy and after 5 days of taking  this medicine I started having horrible stomache pains and black tarry diarrhea.  I went to the dr. that day and they did a rectal and I had blood in my stool. He sent me straight to a Gastro Spec. that day, and he too did a rectal, and found blood.  Also, at that time my blood pressure would drop 25 pts. when I stood up- after waiting 20 min. between pressure readings.  He said this indicated a GI bleed and I had to go the hospital immediately.  He met me there and did a Endo. and found no cause for the blood.  A week later he did a Colonoscopy and still no finding of where the blood was coming from.  Now every year I have a physical, and they do a rectal and every time it comes out positive for blood and my blood tests always indicates borderline anemic.  To this day they still have not found the cause for the bleeding.  I have had ct scans, colonoscopies, upper GI, and small bowel follow through.  No findings- Does this sound familiar to anyone else?  If so, have you found out the cause?

Until I found this forum, I was convinced that the doctors were wrong about my reflux because I never had typical heartburn symptoms. I would experience pain so horrible that I could not function while it was happening. Sometimes all I could do is sit on the couch and rock back and forth. It lasted anywhere from 3 to 9 1/2 hours and it was bad. Mine did not happen usually until late afternoon or evening. A simple drink of water could set it off. Your symptoms seem more severe because they happen throughout the day. My last test was for gallbladder. It was negative but it was good to have it ruled out. From what I read here, gallbladder pain is also horrible. I hope you find out what it is so that something can be done to help you. Take care.

It also feels to me like my whole digestive tract is messed up. As i'm typing this i'm getting pain across the upper abdomen below the breastbone. Just ate 10 minutes ago. Upper GI test was diagnosed as mild acid reflux and not enough to cause the pains I descibe to the Doctors. I also get intestinal cramps and rumbling noises in my abdomen at night everyday. I also get right upper ab pain off and on.  These pains go away when I sleep I think because when I wake up in the morning they are completely gone or very mild.  Whitin a hour after I'm awake the pain process starts all over again.  I also suffer from anxiety as you do.  I think sometimes this cause my problems.

I humbly submitt this post only because I just read this the other day: Dr. Dean Edell was asked about colon cleanses and he said that our bodies do not accumulate waste over the years. He said that people thought this before we had endosopy and now that Doctors can look up there, they know that it is not true. Nature has the best way to keep our systems working and that is fiber. I am all for natural remedies when they have been proven to work. For example, I now chew DGL tablets istead of taking prilosec and I have not had pain in several weeks. See a concerned lady post for detailed info on natural things that you can try. And Johnj, I remember reading something about blood from other sources showing up in the stool but I don't recall where. Even if that were the cause of the blood, what about your pain? I too had several tests for blood in stool but they could not find the cause. My gyn has suggested endometriosis of the bowel and is treating me for that for now but it cannot be determined for sure until surgery. My gastro doc did not suggest endo, he wanted to refer me to a surgeon because he could not find the cause. You have to do as much research as you can and perhaps chart your symptoms. I hope you find a soloution soon and perhaps someone else will have a similar problem as yours and be able to help you further. Take care.

I have that same problem and went to the hospital with severe pains and the doctors found nothing however after I told them of my symptoms they told me that I had "gastritis", too much acid in the stomach and perhaps an ulcer in my intestines I surmize that I do have an ulcer in my large intestine and my lower intestine which they say flares up on occation, they said to try to avoid grease, liquor, cheese, fried foods and to eat things in moderation...in which I have a habit of not doing...I tend to stuff myself which further exhaserbates the problem...actually some of these conclusions are my own I had to figure it out...which I still am this is what I have come to so far...I also suffer from great anxiety and depression which aids in the further production of acids in my stomach..in which another doctor prescibed to me "xanax" which does help at times but if I keep eating and sleeping it almost nuetralizes the xanax also...I have a tendency to eat then go to sleep...which they say was causing an acid reflux in my intestine which could be drawing acid into the intestine thus creating an ulcer....by continuingly eating daily this even makes the problem consistant...as of right now I am starving my self to allow my digestional tract to heal...which is very hard...I am I guess you could say...fasting...they prescibed to me "prilosec"...I have come to the conclusion that my whole digestinal tract needs to be flushed out and cleaned, but enemas is not my idea of a pleasant experience...I am considering ordering that new product called "super detox" which are mainly herbs and ezymes that eat away much of the waste and fecal matter that has accumulated within the past years....which still resides in your stomach...it has not been excreted...this super detox then has other enzymes that help remove bacteria and other organisms that may cause a series of symptoms...and then replaces them with good bacteria and enzymes it is 4 or 5 step process and costs about 80 or 90 bucks...I am already contemplating  order in the next few weeks...and see what happens...in the mean time I have to minimize my food intake which the doctor did not tell me to do but I think it is nessesary to fast and only eat a very small portion of liquidy foods like soup or cream of wheat or oatmeal...about a cup or so some thing that is watery that can make you feel like you have eaten but wont cause a serious blockage...and avoid eating bulky foods for a while no hard meat like steak or hamburger..or bread or things that become bulk in the intestinal tract it is that bulk that scrapes against the abraisions or ulcers within the intestines which can cause some serious pain and bloating when irritated....even water or liquids can cause this slight pain...of course these are my own personal conclusions...I have seen 2 different doctors within the past 2 1/2 years and they did not go into detail as I have...which leads me to believe that most doctors are not detailed minded or simply dont care or dont know that giving details such as not eating or eat only liquidy foods if you cannot stand the hunger...is important but it is.... in which they should be recomemding that we should clean our intestinal tracts which should of been recommended...but like I say I dont know why they dont recommend it...they are not very consciensous and dont seem to cover the whole spectrum....of root and cause...they just say well I dont find anything so take 2 of these and go home or call a specialist....
