Is this GERD?

A year ago, I had an endoscopy and started taking Protonix for GERD.   It hasn't been bad until recently and I'm not sure what my problem is!    I feel like someone is pouring drain cleaner down my throat, horrible, horrible burning in the throat and mouth.  Bitter taste too.  It comes in waves of very severe for 24 hours or so; then, a mild simmer and my mouth just feels like I burned it eating something hot.  If I do not have the terrible burning, I am nauseous with a bitter taste and no appetite to speak of. It doesn't matter if I eat or not, the symptoms are there and sometimes, I think if I eat, it gets worse.  Of course, I am eating extremely light, toast, pudding, etc.   I have no abdominal pain.   Is this GERD or what else could be causing this?     (seeing a dr soon but anxious to hear from anyone with a similar experience!)

Chickensoup:  Thanks for the response.  I was taking the Protonix and quit because I thought that it made the burning sensation worse sometimes! I saw my family dr because the gastroenterologist was on vacation.  He double the Protonix to 1 am/1pm and no relief.   Seeing the specialist tomorrow!  Can't wait!  I'll keep you posted.
