Diet after recovery

by Triss, Apr 18, 2002 12:00AM
I've recently been told that I need to have my gall bladder removed.  I've gotten a lot of information on the laparoscopic surgery process itself and what to expect of myself on physical exertion for a short length of time later.  What I am not seening is if there is a reccommended diet for patients after having the surgery and the bulk of the recovery time is over.

At the moment, I'm staying on an extremely low fat diet, but I do wonder if having occasionally higher fat content foods is something I should stay away from due to the fact that I won't have the organ to process it any more.

I had my gall bladder removed in early February. I was extremely sore for about 2-3 weeks after the surgery. For the first week, I ate light, low-fat foods, like rice, soup, pasta. After about two weeks, I could eat most things, and I was having few digestive problems (just a little cramping). Starting about 1 month after the surgery, I started eating more meats and other fatty foods like ice cream. I can eat everything now, with no restrictions and no complications. I feel great --- it's so much better than hurting all the time and feeling sick and run down like I was before the surgery. (I was a little surprised by how sore I was for the first two weeks after the surgery. I've known other people who were up and about within a few days. But for me, I was completely wiped out for a few weeks.

My Doc said "diet as tolerated". So I worked my way up from low fat and 3 1/2 weeks later find that I can eat just about anything. That certainly wasnt the case prior to surgery.

Most people seem to be able to eat anything..... some have to keep an eye on fats and not eat too much of them. And then a handful of others seem to have lots of problems with fats.

Every body is different! Good luck with your surgery!!

arbor, I also am still sore. Much longer than most people too. But I did have emergency surgery and a few complications, so I am figuring that is why its taking a bit longer for me.
