Anti-depressants help, what one is best

by harrys, Apr 29, 2002 12:00AM
Hello,

I have had irritable bowel syndrome for most of my life.  In 1994, when I lived in Los Angeles we had the Northridge earthquake.  I experienced a major anxiety and was put on Paxil, an anti-depressant after months of trying natural ways of help.  The drug immediately helped with my anxiety but caused side effects that included decreased libido and inability to achieve an orgasm.  But there was one side effect that seemed like a miracle.  AT 20mg of Paxil my IBS seemed to disappear.  The majority of symptoms if not all were gone.  Since then I have gone on and off Paxil for periods of time experiencing the same effect.  The problem is the sexual side effects are so bad that it ruins that part of my life.  I have been looking into other anti-depressants such as Zoloft and Celexa and have tried Elavil and Wellbutrin SR.  No luck with Wellbutrin or Elavil.  Does anybody know if Zoloft or Celexa are any better than Paxil? Or does anybody have any experience with them?

Thanks

Celexa did not control my moodswings as well as Zoloft, however, I heard it is the best for having sexual desires again.  Zoloft is so so - for me Prosac was the worst.  I think all of these drugs have some effect on six drive.  I do like the Zoloft the best.

Good luck!

I started on Zoloft Sunday.  Took it again Monday and all I have gotten is the worst diarrhea ever.  Has anyone else experienced this?  I hear allot of good about Zoloft but am scared to continue it if it leads to constant diarrhea.

I think anti-depressants can be very helpful when needed.  I took Serzone for a period of six months about six years ago and started to have major stomach problems.  I've tried many anti-depressants (prescribed by psychiatrist).  Unfortunately, most of them seem to attack my stomach.  One of the reasons for the use of anti-depressants was to help with my IBS and all my other health problems.  Celexa seems to helpful for many people with stomach problems.  I caution anyone (who has stomach problems) that anti-depressants side affects are known to cause stomach problems and they affect those of us with pre-existing conditions more easily.  However, the side effects can become tolerable as the drug builds in your system.  I am not a doctor so I can only relay my personal experience with anti-depressants.  I've been told that they are other anti-depressants such as impramine (I know I've spelled it incorrectly) can help with IBS. It's an older AD (tricyclic) that's rarely used today, though.  Good Luck.

I used to take zoloft at 50mg and I suffered severe insomnia, so I was put on low dose sleeping pills. It helped. But that was my only side effect. Good Luck! I hope you get better.
