In my case, I didn't have gall stones, but a HIDA scan clearly indicated that my gall bladder was not functioning properly. I read about drugs for dissolving stones and about some of the alternative therapies such as liver cleansing or flushing. In the end, I felt that gall bladder removal was a reasonable course of action. So far, it seems to have been a good decision. The constant aching pain and nausea are gone. My digestion was a little screwed up for the first few weeks after the surgery, but that has improved, and I don't notice any problems now.
