Canker sore questions

I am a male, 33 and I have been suffering from canker sores for my entire life (at leat 30 years)average 2-4 sores per month lasting 2 weeks. They have subsided a little over the last few years however I believe this is from what I have learned and my attempts to control them, not because I am getting older.



I believe they are directly related to acid (mainly citric acid) and sugar and/or carbohydrate intake. If I eliminate acidic beverages completely I do not seem to get any canker sores and if I greatly reduce carbohydrates (Atkins Diet) I can drink all the diet soda and crystal-lite I want without problems. When I was younger certain foods and drinks would sting the sores however now it does not seem to hurt anymore unless the sore is full blown but I can feel that the sores are agrevated by some things I eat and drink. I can now tell when my mouth feels "weak" not a certain spot, but just in general and I am in danger of getting a canker sore somewhere so I will usually try to avoid certain foods.

A few years ago in college I was forced into the health center a few times with the largets canker sores I have ever experienced, so painful it hurt tremendously when plain water touched them. The doctor burned it with a chemical on a long wooden stick. He said "this will sting a bit" and boy did he mean it! I almost fainted it hurt so bad but only for a few seconds, then it was gone. The second time I went in I asked if I could get a prescription for them but he said it was too dangerous. I would really like to know what that stuff was, even if I can not get some for myself, I would like to be able to talk to my doctor about them (find someone who has and can use them)



Just to let everyone know, I have tried the supplenents L-lysene?? changing toothpaste (with the brand without the canker causing chemical) and I have tried every store purchased, and a few prescription, medications including the new superglue based Sooth-And-Seal from Colgate (currently in use at the moment)

Hi, I use to get canker sores as a child but I believe it was from stomach problems.  I use to use a product called Gleoxide (spelling?) It is like a mouthwash and it did help a lot.  I guess they still make it.  Go to your pharmacy and ask if they heard of the stuff or something like it.  Good Luck!

When I feel like I am getting a canker sore or cold I use Cold-Eeze zinc lozenges right away.  Let it dissolve in your mouth, don't suck on it like candy.  If the canker sore or cold do break thru it is alot less severe and only lasts a few days.

Hi, I've been using this antibacterial mouthwash (with chlorhexidine gluconate in it) that seems to help.

I get sores in my mouth like that too. I've had them since I can remember and they come and go, but using Chlorhexidine Gluconate mouthwash and taking 250mg of Tetracycline wipes them out almost overnight. Also, sucking on teabags (yes teabags) and ice cubes help alot.

I used to work in a dental office.  I have heard of the product you are referring to but do not know what it is called.  If you live in the Wichita KS area, I can let you know of a dentist that uses it. (Please e-mail me for this information)  Another thing that does cut back on the canker sores is a mouth rinse which is by Rx only called Periodex.  You are doing the right thing by eliminating highly acidic foods.  Unfortunatley, canker sores are from a virus in your system.  There are no cures for viruses.  The average duration period from that first tingle until they disappear is usually 7-10 days, no matter what you do.  The mouthrinse does tend to shorten whatever the length that yours generally last.

I've had major problems with very painful outbreaks of what was diagnosed as aphthos stomatitis (one of several forms of canker sores) for years. And I too have tried virtually everything to find and effective treatment for outbreaks. Finally I happened upon the best MD I've ever had in my 59 years who Rx'd me for Triamcinolone Acetonide Dental Paste USP, 0.1%. The change it's made for me has been nothing short of revolutionary. As someone has already mentioned, the sores are caused by an uncurable virus. What this 'prescription-only' product has done for me, is give me a tool that really works in managing something that controlled the quality of my life during the all to frequent, ugly outbreaks. You simply apply a small amount of the paste directly to each outbreak site at bedtime, being careful not to rub it off or wash it off by drinking, eating or talking and/or rubbing your tongue over the site(s). When I first started using it, I often had to apply it several nights in a row before the outbreak subsided. Now, one early application knocks it out comepletely. I've also found that the earlier I apply the paste, the more effective it is in quelling an outbreak. If you decide to try it, I sincerely hope that it works as well for you as it has for me. Believe me, I remember well the excruciatingly painful outbreaks that would take over my life for days at a time. You'll need an Rx for it from either an MD or DDS.
