I've never had the procedure but my wife has several times. She just had it two weeks ago while in the hospital and the doctor was able to find a stricture of her common bile duct and do a sphincterotemy. Here's the url to an explanation of the procedure, hope it helps. http://www.gicare.com/pated/epdgs20.htm

Hi, ERCP itself wasn't bad and depending what your Gastroenterologist does will depend what if any pain you will have afterwards.  As long as the person who is preforming the procedure has experience, I believe you will be okay.  About 25% of the folks who have this procedure get pancreatitis.  I had a sphincterotomy on the pancreatic duct with stent and the bile duct. I had the procedure done at 2pm and at 6pm I walked to the parking garage of the University Hospital.  I would like to tell you not to worry about it but I know that is silly.  I hope thing go well for you.  Let us know how things turn out.  Good Luck!

Can anyone speak about the risk of pancreatitis involved?

I just saw a GI doctor who spoke about the risk being up to 25%.It could be mild to life threatening and that death is a low but possible risk. Although he hasn't had a patient die from it , it scared me too much to have the ERCP done.

Now, they are pretty sure I have Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction type 111 and that there is no cure except to maybe cut and do a sphincterotomy and that drugs usually don't help this condition.

Can anyone here speak to that? Anyone have any luck with any drugs? I can't believe that the risk of ERCP and sphincterotomy is so high and risky. Is the pancreatitis recurring after that?

What if you leave the sphincter alone, and just live with it?

Any ideas?

Hope you'll come back and tell us how it went.  I'm supposed to have it done but put it off due to risks.

As with any surgery there is a risk but this surgery is nothing to speak of. I did not have any complications and a sphincterotomy was done on both the panacreatic duct and the bile duct.  I was put on a diet of no red meat and low fat.  As long as I stay away from the above mention, no pain.  If you are afraid of surgery, then you should try restricting your diet to chicken and fish to see if it helps with the pain.  If someone had told me this 8 years ago, I probably would not have needed the surgery.  I am most happy I had the surgery and that I am able to control the pain.  Good Luck!
