High Ferritin - Low Haemoglobin - High Liver Function Test : Any Thoughts?

by bloaty, Jun 17, 2002 12:00AM
I am a 36-year-old male and have had a bloated stomach feeling for about 5 years with minor pain occasionally.  In the last 18 months i have had two episodes of what appeared to be steatorrhoea (orange oil floating above stools).  I normally experience diarrhoea once every two weeks.

My liver function test was abnormal with ALT of 94 (range 5-65).  Ferritin is elevated at 939 (range 30-350).  Haemoglobin is 117 (range 130-180),

I had a CT scan and this did not demonstrate any pancreatic abnormalities but confirmed fatty liver. I had a gastroscopy, which revealed evidence of bile reflux and gastritis.  The biopsies did not reveal any duodenal pathology and short mild inflammation without helicobacter pylori, which may be due to bile reflux, and maybe the cause of bloating, said my Gastroenterologist.

I await results on further blood tests due to low haemoglobin level (I am from Mediterranean decent) as well as haemochromatosis gene PCR due to elevated ferritin.

Your comments would be appreciated.
