Another aspect of lifestyle is medication, as some prescription medications have been linked to breast cancer. Metronidazole1 (flagyl) an antifungal, and Nitrofuraxone2 used to treat skin wounds and stomach ulcers, may increase an individual’s risk for breast cancer. Valium and Xanax3 can increase prolactin levels, which can stimulate the growth and development of invasive breast tumours. When cancer in the breast tissue is present, these drugs will accelerate its growth. Unfortunately, these drugs are commonly given to decrease anxiety in patients with cancer.
In addition to the above-mentioned medications, cholesterol-lowering drugs consisting of fibrates and statins, such as Pravachol (pravastatin), have been found to cause breast cancers in laboratory tests. As well, one study found that women taking pravastatin had twelve times the rate of breast cancer than women who were not taking the drug4. Tagament, a drug used for ulcers and indigestion, can increase the level of bad estrogen that promotes breast cancer and decreases the good estrogen5. Tagament can also cause breast enlargement in men and can increase the risk of breast cancer5. Finally, antihistamines such as Claritin and Atarax may promote the growth of already existing tumours6.
