Gastritis Sufferers!

by nanci, Aug 01, 2002 12:00AM
Had my scope on Monday and was diagnosed with gastritis, not reflux The doctor appeared nonchalant about it according to my daugter who was there.  Waiting for biopsy report to rule out H-Phylori and until then, the doctor said to take what works!

Nexium, made me sick these past months so I swtiched to acid blockers (AXID), two in AM, two in PM.  Seemed to help alittle.

Once the tissue results are back, the doctor will prescribe a new PPI, probably Protonix.  At this point, I'll take anything to help.

Got a few tips for another board like drinking Marshmellow Root Tea and aloe juice.  Has anyone had any success with alternative treatment for gastritis?    Did anyone go on a self help program and got rid of it.  I know I can't live this way, it's miserable and I'm so tired of being sick.

Most people on this board appear to be GERD sufferers and I realize alot of what they do to help may apply to me so I appreciate the tips from people like Concerned Lady but wondering if there are people strickly dealing with gastritis and what they do.

Dear Nanci,

Here's a link to check out:

http://www.doctormurray.com/Qarchive/iberogast.htm

If you try this herbal preparation, make sure you're not allergic to any of the ingredients. Ask your docs & pharmacist, first. If you try this, let us know if it helps.

If you try the gastric reflux "tips", let us know if they help at all, or not, regarding your gastritis.

I hope others will respond too.

Feel better soon!

Thanks for the link.  I'm taking Green Magna right now and just bought some liquid iron.  But until I start to feel 100% better, I don't want to start introducing too many alternatives.  I did that while on Nexium and it seems the alternatives and the Nexium were "competing" against each other and I ended up feeling worse.  Once I stopped everything, including the Nexium, I did an about face and felt 50% better so I want to be cautious.  Once the doctor calls, and he should early this week, and I have the results of the biopsy, then I can go forward.  Right now, I feel pretty good, not any worse and maybe alittle better - I sometimes think the medicine they give you makes things worse!

Did you take anything for Gerd related anxiety? I'm reading alot about taking anti-depressants when you suffer from GERD and related stomach problems.  Many doctors are prescribing this with success.  I've never taken anything for anxiety or depression so I'm very hesitant and wonder if it's really helpful.

Dear Nanci,

Psychiatric drugs can sometimes be helpful, BUT (and it's a big but) such drugs can have horrible side effects, both while a person is on them, and then later, when a person tries to withdraw off of them.

Before you go the "drug" route, you may want to read the package inserts (the ones for both patients & docs), and see (in advance)some of the scary side effects of these meds. Then, you, along with your doc & pharmacist, can assess the risk/benefit "ratio", and see whether the benefits outweigh the risks, in your particular situation.

Some non-toxic methods to combat depression include:

1)psychotherapy with a sympathetic and kind psychotherapist

2)group therapy

3)Bach flower essence "remedies" (sort of like homeopathy, but different)

4)Homeopathic preparations (remedies), found in good pharmacies and health food stores

5)Some herbs (use caution--consult with your pharmacist and doc before trying these)

6)Greatly improve the diet, including possible Vitamin B complex (taken with food and water) supplements that smooth out rough edges. Consult with your doctor & pharmacist, to be sure these are OK in your particular case. Other "supplements" may also help, but use caution, and consult with your pharmacist & doc.

7)Exercise can often help decrease depression by creating "endorphins", that are natural "pain killer" molecules, and which lift the spirits

8)Meditation &/or prayer &/or Yoga &/or Tai Chi &/or Acupuncture, etc.

9)10 "bear hugs" a day, plus 10 "belly laughs" a day

10)More ideas that others will share with you.

Hang in there, and I wish you the best. :-)
