Still in pain......still so nauseated!!!!

by sarahmay, Aug 30, 2002 12:00AM
I have been nauseated for over a year..finally dr's did a HIDA scan and my ejection fraction was 8%.  However, I have no gallstones, just a gall bladder that's not functioning..so they removed it over a week ago by laproscopic surgery.  My main overall symptom was nausea, i did not experience typical gall bladder pain.

A few days after the surgery the pain was subsiding, and I was feeling better, however, the nausea continued with great severity.  I even stopped taking my pain killers with hope that perhaps this was exacerbating the nausea, the nausea continued.

Then about 5 days after the surgery, I started having intense pain in my gall bladder area..it got so bad I went to the hospital, they could find nothing. no infection, no abscesses, no nothing.

I guess I'm at my wits end with all of this.  My doctor doesn't know why I'm still nauseated, or why I'd "suddenly" be in pain a week after surgery, eventhough a few days after surgery, my pain was minimal, and now it's excruciating.

Previous to my HIDA scan I had every test possible testing for gastroperesis, which came back normal, ulcers, etc...i've had tubes in every end....and still nothing.  So, when I finally had the HIDA scan I was so relieved that there was a reason for my feeling so nauseated.....and now after the surgery........

STILL NAUSESTED!!!

My question is:  has anybody out there experienced pain after surgery, when they had none beforehand?  and what about the nausea?  Is there anything that works..besides phenegran, which drugs me out completely! has anybody had this similiar experience? thanks.

Hi, I can't answer the question about the post op pain, but I can tell you my experience with nausea. Some time ago I was terrible nauseated all the time, had a scope done and it showed H. Pylori infection.  Was treated with antibiotic and antacid, but afterward the nausea never did go away much.  Always after eating there was nausea, till a naturapath told me I was probably low on stomach acid.  Sipping a tablespoon of natural applecider vinegar in a glass of water with meals was very helpful to me.. also Vit B complex 50 mg. a day helps the stomach produce the secretions for digestion it's supposed to. Even now whenever I am tempted to overeat, or have eaten something rich, I might get a bit nauseated and a cider vinegar or wine vinagar drink will clear it up within minutes. I hope this may be of help to you.

Your response was VERY helpful. I am now on my second round of antibiotics for H. Pylori and am nauseated most of the time. I heard cabbage juice and DGL help also. I'm going to try the cidar vinager tonight and see if it helps.

Thanks again,

Abbey

Abbey,

I experienced the same thing when I got my gallbladder out.  I had it out in April of 200.  I still have pain in that area.  You can still get s stopped up bile duct , too. Or stones in your bile duct.  I know because my mother had that happened to her.  One of the signs for that was her urine was real dark.  almost the color of coffee.  I still get nausea.  SO, who knows?  Just some insight.

Let me know.

Thanks to all of you for your comments and insight.  Yes, I was tested for H.pylori, and it was negative, they did find chronic gastritis however, but said that should not cause 24/7 nausea.

Anyway, I may try the apple cider vinegar....the odd part about my nausea is that it has nothing to do with what I eat or do not eat...I wake up with severe nausea, I go to sleep with it....it never seems to change.

Thanks again, any other information would be more than greatly appricated!

Also, I did try Ginger...doesn't work...

I have been suffering from pretty much the same symptoms.  Had my gallbladder out in July (22).  I had pancreatitis and no gallbladder stones.  I ran about a week after my surgery so my surgeon put me on an antibiotic that is known for causing nausea.  I though that was the problem.  He went ahead and prescribed phenergan to help.

After the antibiotic was gone the nausea WAS NOT!

Next he prescribed Pepcid because he though maybe I had developed an ulcer after the surgery (the surgery didn't quite go as planned and there were some complications).

Two weeks later the Pepcid still wasn't helping.  At that time he sent me back to my Gastro.  At this point I have had had post-surgery sonogram, CT, endoscopy and more blood work than can be imagined.  I just had the endoscopy done and he took a biopsy of my pancreas and stomach.  He said my stomach was inflammed although he doesn't see an ulcer.

I also still get the pain that makes me think I'm having an attack.  At first I thought I must have been having phantom pains.  My body's way of readjusting.  Now I'm just not so sure.

Please let me know if you have any luck with a diagnosis.  The whole gastro issue thing is new to me since my diagnosis in July of pancreatitis and gallbladder and would like to be informed as much as possible so I can ask the DR the right questions.

Thanks
