by MKIK, Oct 14, 2002 12:00AM
I am a male 34 years old, recently after an endscopy I diagonised with atrophic gastritis Dr. said There is no medications for it and only you have to change your diet and avoid spicy ... etc. I read about it on the internet and I found that it is a pre-cancer stage I would like to ask How long it takes to happen. Thank you for your kind reply ! Please Help me?

I have chronic gastritis with intestinal metaplasia which is technically a pre-canceous condition.  I have spoke to a few specialists as well as two doctors at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

My undestanding is with the correct life style and avoidance of foods which will irritate you stomach - things like caffine, alcohol, etc.  Avoiding asprin products and taking a PPI in a 15mg dose for maintenance is the best you can do.  Also, yearly scopes would be in order to monitor the gastritis.  I have changed my life style and have eliminated caffine, alcohol, meat, tomatoe products.  I drink aloe juice, drink smoothies, take vitamins in powder form, exercise, don't go to bed unless I've eaten at least 2 hours beforehand.  I drink lots of water and soothing teas.

And, I asked that same question, how long will it take before the IM turns into cancer.  Both doctors said the same thing, "don't know if it ever will - most likely it won't".

I wouldn't overly worry about it.  Just make sure you have a competent doctor who will follow-up with you.

Were you tested for h-pylori?

Dear Nanci

Thank you very much for you reply. I forget to tell you that I am living in japan and it is very difficult to communicate with them and understand them. I guess I did a test for HP but they didn't tell me. The symptom is started from one year ago with sore mouth and sometime burnning sensation as well as little indesigtion. I have changed my life style too, No Coeffe, No Smoking, No. Alchole, ...etc. but I am still sometimes feel that my stomach irritate and there is no progress. I will seek a second opinion within the next month probably I will do another scope.

Thank you again for your kind reply
