by MAVA, Oct 31, 2002 12:00AM
Help.....

I had my gall bladder remove last July. I had a lamparoscopic and everything went really good, I had a fast recovery and I was back to work after 1 weak. I always have an excellent health until this last year. After the surgery I was feeling nauseous and not to perfect but I was thinking it was normal. but I still feeling nauseous and having a pain in my right side under my ribs and in my back, I visit my doctor and she send me to a Gastrenterologist   thinking I had stones in the common bile duct, the Gastrenterologist did an endoscopy thinking that I had an ulcer.  everything was ok... and she said that can not be stons..can she know that with just an endoscopy???.....for few weeks I thought I was getting crazy how can I imagine this pain, so I decide to go to other doctor . He make me an ultrasound. the day before the Ultrasound I talk with a friend and she said that not always a stone in the common bile duct will show in an ultrasound or endoscopy that I have to get an ERCP .....is that true??? ... the ultrasound doesn't show stones and all my blood tests are perfect the doctor said that is gastritys (but I just have a endoscopy and everything was normal)..... I am lost I need help and I don't know were to turn ..... I still having pain in my right side and in my back, feeling nauseous and vomiting few times.... some days I fell beter and with a dull pain...it can be a stone???

Your symptoms are soooooo similar to mine.  I had my gallbladder out in July 2002.  Never really fully recovered.  The surgeon nicked an artery during the surgery so he explained that I would have more pain than ususal.

I have had the following tests done with no diagnosis as of yet:

     2 abdominal x-ray series

     2 abdominal (gallbladder) sonograms

2 abdominal CT scans (with and without contrast)

     1 HIDA scan

1 scan of my pancreas (not sure what the name was)

1 MRCP (MRI of the bile duct)

     1 Gastric emptying test

1 small bowel follow thru test

     1 EGD (upper endoscopy)

Blood work so many times I cannot count.

I had acute pancreatitis when I had my gallbladder attack so my case was a little more complicated, but they never found any stones.

I have been referred to the nearest hospital that has a unit that specalizes in GI problems for an ERCP with dye.  I spoke with the hospital just a few days ago and they have told me that it is not guaranteed that the doctor will even perform the test once I drive the two hours to get there.  He wants to see me on a clinical basis first to determine "if this is the test you need" - whatever that ends up meaning.

My immediate problem is that I still have severe pain quite frequently (GI prescribed Darvocet) and my appointment at the hospital is not until December 20

I will be interested to see if you get any answers, if you do please post.  I am very interested.

I had been sick for 6 months and finally my dr agreed to take my gallbladder out.  After months of research I kept on asking my surgeon all sorts of questions about ducts and sphincter of oddi and that kind of thing.  During my surgery the surgeon looked at my bile ducts (because of my incessant questioning) and realized they were closed shut to the point that he couldn't even get a catheter in it.  He just cut it out along with my gallbladder, which would have been working fine had it not been for the bile duct blockage.  The surgeon didn't say right out that they don't regularly check the ducts during surgery but did say he only noticed it because he looked specifically for it.  Otherwise I would still be in pain and end up having an ECRP like you're doing now.  Keep on asking questions, and eventually you'll find an answer.  Good luck.

I can definately relate to what you have been going through.

I have been having pains in my ruq area pains that will start on the side, like a runners cramp, to stabbing pains, that go to the middle of my stomach, all the way to the back where the right kidney is for the last 4yrs.On a good day it is only an ache, on normal days it is so painful, cannot sit, stand or lay down for any long period of time, to pain so bad i have gone to the hospital, with upset stomach, vomiting, fever.  Started seeing my Dr. last year, did the first set of tests ultrasound, ct scan with contrast of abdomen and pelvic, scope down the throat.  Everything came back normal.  Stopped going to the Dr. by frustration, and pains just became the everyday ache, nothing tylenol couldnt help.  Last month, started up again, bad.  Anything sets it off. Just had to go to the hospital few days ago with the pain, 7 hrs in the hospital room, two shots of demerol(sp)Dr. came back and said i had a urinary tract infection. Sent me home.  A Normal UTI does not create such pain.  Had my hida scan this past wednesday, tech said emptying fine, did not have the drink to see if it was contracting.  Will see the Dr. in a few days to go over the results.  Have been off work for a week,  so hard to sit for more than ten minutes with the pain.  I just pray for the pain to stop, it interupts your daily life.  I am 31 female, over weight, all my aunts (6) have had their gb removed and countless cousins.  The way i feel right now, i would like to just reach into my side and pull whatever is hurting so bad out myself.
