Abdominal pain, mucousy stool

by Dominion, Nov 02, 2002 12:00AM
Hi, wanted to get some friendly advice. 33 year old male here,

relatively healthy. Last night I had an incredibly painful abdominal

pain. I produced fairly normal looking stool, slightly dark.

Then all this morning, and all today through this evening and now,

I've had mild abdominal pain which has made me go to the bathroom

numerous times. There is hardly any stool, except for mucousy

substance which is red (blood). A few BMs today were normal brown,

but "flat" shaped and not nice and cylindrical, the stool was streaked

with some bright red.

History: I have hemorrhoids, which flare up a few days every so

often (one every two months maybe) where thick blood will drip

into toilet. Bleeding immediately stops after BM. I wasn't too fazed

by the bloody mucous today, but I'm just wondering...1) should I

just wait this out and not worry if my BMs return to normal, 2) there

is still lingering abdominal pain and a slight sensation of  wanting

to go, I was considering using an enema to "clean myself out" and

wondered if that's a good idea, 3) any other advice for me?

Thank you.

Hi, I have been dealing with your exact syptoms for 7 months now.  So far the doctors have decided that it is IBS, however, like you, it came out of no where.  There are times when I feel absolutely normal and a few hours later I feel awful.  I have been through every test known to man to no avail.  They did find a cyst on the gall bladder but there is no reason for the gall bladder to cause my problem.  I would just say to you that if you have another bout of this if this your first to go to a doctor.  If you find you can not go for a couple of days as I sometimes get, try not to strain, this is worse for the hemmeroids and makes you feel like all your insides are coming out although nothing actually does.  Try a new drug called Zelnorm or like me 6 colace a day.  After a day or two everything passes normal.  I would definately get some testing though depending on where your abdominal pain is.  Mine is on the left and middle.  I'll check back.  I'd like to know if you find out anything.  Hope you feel better.

I have recently had this too..I think it may be hemmoroids and IBS together..It seems to happen in the morning mostly and I think it may be caused by mustard or some spicy food..I am going for colonoscopy in 2 weeks, only because my dad died of colon cancer at 58..but I honestly think it is IBS with hemmies..My lower back also hurts on left side piercing to front of stomach and get slightly nauseaus when I get this..It is weird....

You could have Crohn's Disease, it came on me literally over night.  I was the most regular person you ever met!  Then hemoroids started 6 months before, then less stool, funky stool,

mucous...etc...

45 days later and 45 pounds lighter, I met the right G.I. doctor and he did a scope in his office, not too invasive and lasts like two minutes....that helped him determine I should be hospitalized and to be tested for Crohn's.  Very hard to diagnose, but can be over diagnosed, as is the case when many are simply diagnosed with IBD/IBS (the umbrella term for all intestinal disorders).

Crohn's has nothing to do with what you eat or what you don't eat, Diverticulitis however does.  Both of which you cannot

find out you have unless you have the colonoscopy...it is painless, better than a barium enima for sure!!! The day prior for prep sucks because you are cleaning your self out.

If the blood in your stool is brownish red, then the blood is coming from a higher place in your colon and would then not be hemoroids but possibly cysts.  Diverticulitis is slight cuts in the intestinal wall and usually by simply adding fiber to your diet, like metamucil, you will feel much better. Stay away from

roughage. Crohn's however can have a 100 different types and can

run from your asophogus to your rectum.

If the blood in your stool is definately red, you are looking at more of a rectal problem, could still be hemoroids, but can also

be Crohn's.

The best and only thing I can recommend after 5 years of suffering is get the colonoscopy and or the endoscopy if it may

be something up higher....but do it and do it soon....Crohn's

is no friend to anyone...and there is no cure...just maintenance drugs and knowing what to eat and not eat so you don't aggrevate it....but remember what you have eaten does not cause Crohn's, only what you eat after you have been treated will ''affect'' your symptoms.

Good Luck!
