Weight Gain

by lrj, Dec 17, 2002 12:00AM
I have recently been diagnosed with IBS.  I understand many of the symptoms, but one I have has not been addressed.  When I ask my doctor, he just shrugs.

On any given day, I can gain between three and ten pounds.  I am relatively the same size I have been for over 12 years (I am 38).  A few days later I will lose most of the weight.  This is a yoyo.  I am holding onto five pounds I gained about a month ago.  Some days I will be back to my normal weight, but, most I am up.  My stomach has always been flat.  Now it is not.  This is very frustrating to me.  I have no way of knowing what is causing this.  If I need a strict diet to lose the weight, I need to know why it will all of a sudden go down and back up.

Is this normal with IBS.  I also have a strange problem of having to urinate often at night only.  Are the symptoms related or could something else be causing this.

Thank you,

lrj

Have you been checked for gluten intolerance or parasites?

Are you taking any Tylenol or Vioxx or any other drug for arthritis type pain?  I have found that when I take these drugs that I swell up and gain 5-6 pounds in a day or two.  It is a very uncomfortable feeling.

I have also been diagnosed with IBS and keep putting on weight, I work out 3 times a week, don't drink or smoke, watch my diet and yet on some days I will start loosing weight and then put it back on and then some, sometimes put on a couple of pounds in a day. My gastro does not have any answers-could it be just toxins in my stomach that are causing the weight gain, should I try colonic irrigation or detox-very confused never had problem loosing weight before I got IBS, have now put on about 20 pds
