constipation, loose stools, and mucus

by danmorgan, Dec 19, 2002 12:00AM
Background:I am 41 years old white male at normal weight and in good health who had a preventive colonoscopy two years ago that removed a benign polyp. The last five months I have been treated with a wide variety of antibiotics for prostate problems.

My current concern is that I have been constipated for four weeks. When I have a bowl movement it is broken into small shaped boulders(size of a nickel or a little more)dark in color with mucus. No blood but I have to strain and use my finger to pull the loose stool out. I have had bowl movement with laxitives that produce a movement that is half sold with the other half breaking into these small rocks.I went to my Colon Doctor and he said my rectum is a little inflamed(I suffer from hemoroids)and that could be the reason for the mucus. He also told me to try some metamucil and give it a few weeks.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? If so.,what could it be?Should I be doing something else to treat it. I am a little worried.

Thanks,

Danmorgan

I take a drug called MiraLax.  It is a Rx laxative. It is absorbe by the body in amounts less that 2%, which means it is safe for pregnant or nursing mothers.  Due to the amount of pain meds I take, this has been a "bowel saver", (hee hee) AND it tastes better than Milk of Magnesia.
