gardenmaniac-Question for you

by wolffs5, Jan 01, 2003 12:00AM
I have been following your posts about your daughter.  I have had the same problems for 2 years now.  Still in limbo.  Just curious, when they removed her gallbladder did they find any problems with it?  I know from reading here if there was no sludge or stones it means it may not have been the initial problem.  Did they find anything in her gallbladder?  I'm just waiting for mine to get real bad again.  I'm sick of going to doctors and having tests done, for them to come back normal!  I also have Multiple Sclerosis and that's enough to deal with!  Not to mention my 3 kids under age 9.  I hope your daughter is doing well!  Have a happy & hopefully healthy New Year!

We don't know yet what kind of problem her GB had. The surgeon did not see anything obvious when he took her GB out (he said he wished he had)..she goes for her first post op check Jan 9th, so maybe we will have some test results then. He did say that he has NEVER taken out a GB that the lab said was OK after testing.

She had an EGD done October 2 and the Gastro doc took a bile sample at that time from the small intestine & there were no crystals..which the surgeon said meant it was unlikely they would find any sludge or tiny stones. An ultrasound done 18 months ago showed nothing..although it was terribly painful for her. Her previous GI doc just put her on Bentyl and said it was IBS. (which by the way..if you get that diagnosis...change doctors..they are done looking)

When we get test results back I will let you know.

It has now been 5 days since the surgery..she is no longer feeling nauseaus, does not have the previous pain where her GB was, just the after effects of surgery, healing, etc. She did eat a peanut butter cup yesterday (against my motherly advice...)...bad cramps and diareah later...oh well..she won't do that again for awhile!

Yep, that's the dx they gave me.  I won't go back to that GI doc again.  He got mad at me because he said I had more tests than most people.  I insisted on a HIDA scan, which came back at 42%.  Although I had alot of pain from the insure drink & the tech said my gallbladder was emptying slowly.  GI said you have IB and if I am still in pain make another appointment.  I will not go back to that jerk!  I had the HIDA scan in October.  I still have occasional pain.  Not as bad as it has been in the past.  It seems about every three months it gets so bad I'm doubled over.  Mostly upper right quad, burning into my back, & nausea.  So now I will wait until it gets real bad again & I'll start all over I guess.  I would have liked to have had this problem solved because this month I start theraphy for Multiple Sclerosis.  These are very strong drugs and can affect the liver and also make me very sick.  So I'm afraid what will happen with what I really beleive is my gallbladder.  After your next appointment with the doc, please post what he found out about the gallbladder, I'm real curious!  Hope your daughter is doing well! Thank you for responding to my post.

Sound like we are in the same boat.  I have heard the same IBS bs from the first doc I saw.  IBS is a real problem - but it is not what I have going on.  I also have the upper rt quad pain that has varied from "severe attack" to mild discomfort since Oct 2000, back pain, and nausea.  I also have had many tests w/ normal results.  Everything I read seems to point to the gallbladder area.

At a different post I mentioned an article I came across that tries to answer the question  "I have had my gallbladder out so why am I still having gallbladder pain?"  It discusses two other areas besides the gallbladder, biliary duct and tightening of the Sphincter of Oddi muscle.  The article in entitled "How to control your Sphincter of Oddi or bile duct spasms" and can be read at http://indiana.edu/~engs/hints/oddi.html

It is a good article.

Let me know if you have problems accessing this article and I will email it to you.

Gardenmaniac did an outstanding job of keeping us informed and giving us some help/info/ideas on what we are all going through.  Lets keep sharing information as we move along in this search.  The answer is out there!

I really would like to read this article, but I can't get into the web site.  Can you email me the article or send me a link.  ***@****.  I really can't beleive that there are so many GI docs out there that don't have a clue, when there seems to be so many of us with similar problems.  I'm glad I'm not alone.  I'm here all the time reading about all the rest of you going threw the same thing.  Hope we all get to feeling better!!

The website is http://www.indiana.edu/~engs/hints/oddi.html

I have read it before and is a good site. I have somewhat of the  same problems as you all. I was only listened to after my doctor saw me in pain and vomiting in the office that she took me seriously--two years mind you, so I understand what your going through. I had my gallbladder taken out over 2 years ago also, the ejection fraction on it was 12%. I had an ERCP with the sphincter cut and a pancreatic duct stricture diliated in October 2002. I was informed in December after a follow up that I also had cysts in the pancreatic duct, two of them. I go back to the GI and he is going to do another ERCP to do some more testing and what ever else he going to do in March of this year. I'm scared to death of this whole thing.

I'm really confused about this whole thing, there is something that has to cause the gallbladder to go bad, I didn't have any stones or sludge, all the surgeon said about my gallbladder was that it was full of adheasions(sp) and was very thick. So far I have not been able to find anything about my condition on the web, I'll just have to keep looking :)

Joy - Joy - Fun - Fun...

Pancreatitis is what you were just describing with ERCP to do a sphincterotomy(sp?), and the cysts and such.  VERY PAINFUL.  Don't wish it even on my ex-husband.

Mine started with passing a gall stone.

When I had my Gall Bladder out, the Dr said it was a non-functioning Gall Bladder. I too still have the ride side pain after 5 years. Also suffer from Reflux of which I take Prilosec for. I suffer from bloating, pain in the right side, nausea, and continue to be sacred to death. These boards help, at least I know I am not alone. My Dr. says the right side pain is deferred from my back. Which I know is Bull, and now I have no comfidence in him. I am going in for a scope on both ends Tues, because the nausea is coming more frequently. OH! for some peace of mind.

Thanks for listening.
