Insurance Exam Lab Test Results

by firecop, Jan 14, 2003 12:00AM
I have a question that may not be serious, but I was wondering if anyone had some insight.  I recently had an Life Insurance Medical Exam completed.  I was approved buy my rate was increased due to "high" liver enzymes.  My SGPT (ALT) showed 63 based on an accepted range of 0-45 U/L.  Also, my Gamma Glutamyltransferase showed 68 based on an accepted range of 2-65 U/L.  I called my doctor's office and left them a message.  One nurse called my home and stated that I should set up a doc's appointment to discuss the results.  Another nurse, the nurse that I normally see, talked to me and stated that these readings were nothing to worry about.  BTW, my glucose was low and my Urinalysis Creatinine was high but she stated it was due to the 16 hour fasting time prior to my test.  Is this something I need to schedule a visit over right away or am I just overworrying here.  Thanks!

Just remembered this, I had a Flu Shot two days before  the blood test.  Could this be affecting this?

This is a very common elevation (yours is pretty minimal) but some further testing to rule out viral hepatitis (B or C) or other low grad liver problems needs to be done.  Get into your family doctor and have the preliminaries done.  You may be refered to a gastroenterologist for further evaluation.  Most of these evaluations determine that the elevations are do to fat in the liver causing inflammation.

I had a similar situation to yours recently. My husband and I went for higher insurance coverage a few months ago. The blood test showed a very slightly elevated ALT and ALS. I mean REALLY slightly...like 2 points. I asked for a Hep test, just to be sure, because I've been very tired for several years. It came back positive for HepC! Now I'm in the middle of testing, and next week I have a liver biopsy to assess any damage I might have. After that, I'm told I'll have up to a year of treatment. The irony is that shortly after that initial insurance test, my enzymes returned to normal. I understand that the enzymes fluctuate all the time, so I feel very lucky to have gotten my diagnosis in this flukey way. I'd pursue this if I were you. What's one more blood test with stakes this high? Good luck!

I was screened for Hepatitis C but the test was negative/non-reactive.  I will set up an appointment with my physician just to be safe.

I have had the same problem.  Insurance exam showed sgot-64/ sgpt-96/ and gamma glutes-93.  everything else was fine. my doctor asked if I drank alot(alcohol).  he sent me for a liver function test(more blood work),  The liver test showed the same high levals.  I am set for a ultrasound test soon(to see what it looks like).  He says that it probly is a fatty liver(fat cells in the liver). I hope this helps you.
