| . | Thank you for your last response.I promise not to burden you again with this.I have chronic constipation due to a systemic candida infection(Tests have proved over and over that it is the cause).Because I have had to use laxatives on a daily basis for 16 years, I now have NO peristalic action in my colon and can't get the fecal matter out. Even with suppositories. Here are my questions...1)If I can get rid of the candida infection, can the peristalic action come back? 2)Exactly types of things does a GI Dr. do for someone with no persitalic action to cause it to come back again? And 3)Is there ANYTHING I can do right now to get the fecal matter out (other than enema's, which don't work)? Thank you for your time.

| mifegr | To answer your questions:
1) There is no guarantee that getting rid of the candida infection would lead to return of motility function. Treatment with antifungal medications can be discussed if your personal physician wants to pursue this route.
2) There are some medications that can be tried, but with only limited success. This can include the antibiotic erythromycin or the motility agent Reglan.
3) Unfortunately, surgery would be the option if all other conservative measures have failed.
Followup with your personal physician is essential.

copy and pste to your browser.
a coffee enema can sometimes restore the action.
also pro biotics will keep candida in check. take a non-dairy form though. |

Thanks for your concern. However, as I said in my question, enemas don't work because I have no peristalic action (the fluid won't come out). And I have been on mega doses of every probiotic known to man. Thanks anyway. |

| . | In case you reach the last option whereby surgery is necessary, this might involve a total colectomy.
I thought it might be helpful to steer you towards my own experience of a total colectomy following torrential diverticular bleeding some 4 years ago so that you know what to expect.
If you click on "browse archives" and then on "colon surgery" and then on a posting in March 2006 ("do I really need extensive resection of colon?") you will find my comments.
Alternatively you can find the posting/comment by typing in my nickname Morecambe in the "Search Medhelp" section in the top right hand corner.
Good luck |
