| Riverliver 8/4/2005 | . | Hello, I'm currently on week 10 and have a bad cold that will not go away. It has developed into severe sinus congestion and coughing up flem. Will antibiotics interfere with the meds (180/1400)? Up till now I have only had mild sides. All blood work has looked good so far also. I have searched the archives but didn't see any topics about this. I was planning on going to the doctor tomorrow. Male, 48, 180 lbs, 1b, stage 1, high v.l., estimated 35 years with disease. Thanks for your help. |
| jmjm530 8/4/2005 C1 | River | Don't think so. I'm on tx and also on the antibiotic Augmentin for sinusitis. My doc is a aware. Just keep in mind that some antibiotics can make you nauceous that just adds to tx discomfort. But if you need it, you need it. Let us know what your doc says. -- Jim |
| HepCinLA 8/4/2005 C2 | jmjm | Forgot...are you on ADs or were you doing a wait and see approach? In anticipation of treatment, I started on AD's but think it gave me sinusitis. I'm taking the antibiotic bactrim but it's not helping. I'm considering weaning off the AD before I start my first injection. |

| jmjm530 8/4/2005 C4 | HepCinLA | No ADs yet. Wait and see approach. Just pegasys, riba, procrit and for the next 8 days, the antibiotic Augmentin. Don't know much about Bactim, but my list of antibiotics for chronic sinusitis include Augmentin, Ceftlin and Avelox. Not sure about Avelox, but one advantage of the first two is that they don't make you photo-sensitive, so you can take the sun. Other strategies for sinusitis include nasal sprays, nasal washings, inhaled steam, antihistimes and short-term nasal steriods. Here are a few web sites (see below)I researched for myself yesterday. As far as linking your sinusitis to an AD, it's possible -- also possible that the AD set off some reflux that in turn triggered the sinusitis. That's what may have happened with me when I took the AD Lexipro for one day. My reflux flared up and then the sinusitis was triggered. As you look through the literature, you'll find a link between reflux and sinusitis that more and more docs are accepting. Other causes of sinusitis may be seasonal allergies, air pollution, or just that a simple cold. If it gets really bad, an MRI of the sinus may help with the dx. | HepCinLA 8/4/2005 C5 | jmjm | was the reflux/sinusitius the reason you came off of Lexapro so quickly? I'm sure it didn't help that I was at the tail end of a cold when I started the Lexapro. I think it aggrevated things and caused full blown sinusitis. The antibiotics don't seem to help b/c I think the AD leaves me perpetually congested. Oh, and I have insomnia to boot! Kind of makes me nervous that if I'm having so many sides with a stupid AD what the heck can I expect when I start taking the real heavy duty meds! |
| jmjm530 8/4/2005 C6 | HepCinLA | I've had GERD (chronic reflux) from the beg of treatment. Drugs such as PPI's weren't working, so I thought I'd try a sedative as there's a conection between stress and reflux and the riba has been winding me up pretty tight. So first I tried Xanax for a few days, but it basically turned me into a stumbling vegetable although my reflux might have improved a bit, if I can remember. LOL. The Lexipro was the next step since its also indicated as a sedative but w/o xanax's over-relaxing and addictive properties. I got quite an energy "bump" the first day on Lexipro but unfortunatly it flared up the reflux. Not sure if it was a stomach thing, or just whatever changes the Lexipro made in my body. But since the whole purpose of the Lexipro was to help the reflux, it seemed counter productive to keep taking it. -- Jim |

I'm probably going to post this elsewhere at some point, but do you (or anyone) know anything about cranial osteopaths? I'm looking into the TMJ/Reflux connectionas well as any neck involvement. Full body breathing/relaxation/meditation also seems to help some but the riba keeps fighting it. It's amazing how much stress there is in life even when you're just vegetating around because of treatment. The idea of a monastic retreat is starting to become appealing.
