would like to hear about your experience with riba rash

by grammajen, Jul 02, 2007 12:00AM
I am in week 18/24 and have only had the rash develop within the last couple of weeks. It cleared up on my upper chest with using HCL 1% cream for one week. My arms and hands now have similar raised red patchy rash with major itch. I also have non-itchy dark red patchy rash under the skin on my ankles and calves. The hepatitis service nurse suggested I take reactine for the itch in the short term and get some atarax from my family doctor if the reactine doesn't work. Today I have reddish colored blotches under my skin everywhere.

I feel nervous that this rash is spiraling out of control and my treatment is going horribly wrong but the Hepititis Service nurse assured me last week that this is common for this treatment.

I would like to hear about other's people's experience with rash from ribavirine. How long did it last? How widespread was the rash? What worked best to deal with the itch? Did anyone discontinue ribavirine and just continue with peginterferon for the remainder of treatment? Did it help?

I will see my Hep C specialist on July 11 to discuss this with him.

My riba rash I believe is not directly caused by riba, but the effect of it lowering your hemoglobin. My rash was at it's worst when my hgb was lowest. When I started procrit, it went away. When I went to 1/2 dose of procrit and my hgb fell again, it came back. When I upped my dose back the rash went away.

That's my theory/experience with it.

my hgb is also low (11.6) and has steadily declined since starting tx.  I am treating 24 weeks.  I have not fallen below 10 however.   I have had a rash on my chest from about the 6 or 7th week, and also my back and the itching comes and goes.   Some days it is so intense.   My head itches constantly.  I've found an ice pack on my check numbs the sensation and I use this when the itching is really bad.

I am over 1 year post tx, and the ONLY lingering side I have is skin issues on my legs.  I am not so sure it was "riba rash" since I never got it looked at, but I still am itchy as heck and have little bumps.  Not to mention the beautiful scarred skin from when it was really bad.  Anyway, I find that keeping everything as moist as possible is helpful.  As far as fixing the problem altogether, I haven't gotten around to that yet, but hope to after I have my baby.  Not sure WHAT the fix is exactly, and I think it varies greatly depending on the person.
