Question Title: zinc losengers safety in pregnancy

Forum: The Maternal and Child Health Forum
Topic: Pregnancy - Normal

Before becoming pregnant I took zinc echinacea herbal throat losengers at the first signs of viral URI's (with good results) after reading among other sources a feature in the Medical Letter about the mechanism of action of zinc and of echinacea. Can I use this in pregnancy? Can I use it in the third trimester?

Dear Alison:
Echinacea has been a part of herbal medicine for a century with no apparent acute or chronic toxicity. Like most subsstances (traditional medicines, herbal medicines), there have been not studies and there is scant information regarding use in pregnancy.
Zinc is a trace mineral that is a part of most multiple vitamin/mineral formulations. Toxicity again seems uncommon.
The other issue is that you are using throat losenges. The presumed action is local and hence the total dose can be keep low.
No one can tell you this medication is safe. We can only tell you that no harm has been reported.
