Question Title: Bacterial spinal Menningitis during Pregnancy

My daughter in law is 26 weeks into her pregnancy with twin girls.She is in the hospital at this time with Bacterial spinal menningitis,could you please tell me the Possible complications to the fetuses at this time.She is 30 years old and is usually in good health.She was just previously released from the hospital for a UTI.What would the possible dangers be for her and the babies.Any info you could provide would be of help .

Dear Patricia:
Bacterial meningitis usually responds to antibiotic therapy. In this setting, treatment of mother takes precedent. There are many antibiotics that are safe to the babies and effective against the bacteria that commonly cause this infection.
Infection of mother from any cause with high fever can provoke early labor.
Complications for mother depend on the bacterium that is causative.
