Question Title: menstrul

Forum: The Maternal and Child Health Forum
Topic: Pregnancy - Normal

i have heard that it is not good to have sex during a womans menstrul cycle. is it true she can get pregnant during that time? if it is not a good idea why?

Dear Steve:
During menstruation, the normal defenses in the female reproductive system are down: the thickened mucus that limits sperm access to the fallopian tubes in absent and the cervix is more open. Sperm can be a carrier for bacteria that otherwise would not be able to get into the fallopian tubes.
Second, the lining of the uterus is shedding: just as a break on skin makes the site more prone to infection, the same is true of the uterus.
Third, menstrual blood acts as a growth medium for bacteria.
Thus, there are three factors that increase risk for infection that can damage the uterine and tubal lining and/or promote to tubal blockage.

Endometriosis is a disease caused by the lining of the uterus being shed backwards through the fallopian tubes into the abdominal cavity (tummy space). Intercourse may exaggerate this reverse flow of fluid and thereby increase the risk for a lady developing endometrosis.
