Question Title: Anatomical problems

Forum: The Maternal and Child Health Forum
Topic: Pregnancy - Abnormal

I read in a book that there are certain anatomical problems that a woman may have that will
not allow her to carry to term. What are these problems and can anyone tell me more about
them- such as what affect they have? Thank you.

Dear Alexis:
Congenital anomalies of the uterus associated with early labor include unicornuate uterus (only one of the halves of the uterus forms); bicornuate uterus (each uterine horn forms but the halves fail to fuse into a single, large cavity): in both circumstances, the size of the baby outgrows the uterine size and early labor ensues.
A uterine septeum is more often associated with miscarriage than preterm labor: the septum is a poor source of nutrition for the developing pregnancy.
Incompetent cervix is a weakness of the cervix so that it opens well before term. It can be acquired from cervical trauma such as surgery, but there is a type for which is present from the first pregnancy.
Acquired conditions include uterine fibroids that do not allow the uterus to expand; asbence of the cervix due to surgery.
