Question Title: Hystercopy D&C

Forum: The Maternal and Child Health Forum
Topic: Pregnancy - Abnormal

What are the possible side effects of an operative Hystercopy D&C? Can having this procedure performed cause endometriosis (sp?) or any other outside of the uterus bleeding? I had a Hystercopy D&C perfromed in Septebmer to remove a polyp from my uterus and have been suffering from lower right abdominal and lower back (small of back) pain. The pain is severe at times and seem to get worst as I get close to my period. I had a IVP and a sonogram performed that were both normal. I'm scheduled for a CT scan next week.

Thanks so much for your help

Dear Sarah:

Hysteroscopy (looking inside the uterus with a viewing instrument) and D&C (dilation and curettage or scraping the wall of the uterus) is a common, fairly safe operation. Side effects include bleeding, infection, peformation (hole through the uterus), scar inside the uterus, scar narrowing the cervix. All of these are uncommon. I am unaware of any association between hysteroscopy, D&C, and the formation of endometriosis.
We all relate happenings to some other event in our life: sometimes they are coincidental in time but have no link, one to the other.
Whenever a patient has been in the position used for hysteroscopy and D&C, low back pain can be a temporary result: this usually improves with time, local heat, simple medications such as Advil. Less often, exercise therapy is required.
I can not explain why you would have right lower discomfort because of this procedure.
You are undergoing investigations that seem appropriate to address abdominal pain.
