My 11 year old daughter has lately been experiencing adominal pains towards the end of a meal or snack or within a minute or two after eating. These pains are intense until she is able to have a bowel movement. Sometimes the occurence is immediate....finish the food, right in to adominal pains, followed by a bowel movement.....sometimes the pain begins within minutes after eating.... the pain does not ease until she has the bowel movement however long the wait is for the bowel movement. Does anyone have any ideas what could be the cause. She is 5'2", 95 lbs and very active and athletic. Until now she has not had any type of health problem. please advise. thank you

Dear Cindy:

Irritable bowel syndrome is a possibility . Is your daughter under any stress lately ? If so , a few modifications in her diet maybe helpful . Observe what diet triggers the symptoms and try to avoid it. Encourage fiber in her diet . Make meal-time a resting time , don't rush through meals . If these measures don't work or symptoms get worse , your physician may prescribe a medication to relieve the most bothering symptom. IBS cannot be diagnosed by blood tests or imaging studies , but your physician may request them to exclude more serious conditions that are similar.
IBS is not dangerous and does not cause long term complications .

Thank you
L.M
