Question Title: efficiency of IUGR diagnosis

Forum: The Maternal and Child Health Forum
Topic: Pregnancy - Abnormal

I am wondering how often a baby with poor growth in utero (aka
interuterine growth retardation) is missed and then later diagnosed after
birth. Is it common for an Ob/gyn to miss this if it is extreme and there
is a frequent use of ultrasound in office?
My son had poor growth the last month in utero and after he was born was
labelled an IUGR baby. I felt that he wasn't growing well during that
time.
Anyhow, I would appreciate any information on this mishap.

Thank you.

Holly

Dear Holly:
Growth retardation diagnosis requires that measurements of the baby be plotted against the expected growth pattern and the baby fall outside the range of normal. Office ultrasound is often used to simply assess fluid around the baby and position of the baby.
Growth the lags only during the last month of pregnancy is difficult to diagnose. Most growth retardation begins much earlier.
There is a great difference between growth retarded and small size. These terms can be used incorrectly as interchangeable.
