Question Title: Misscarriage

Forum: The Maternal and Child Health Forum
Topic: Pregnancy - Abnormal

I recently had a misscarriage at 7 weeks. I heard that taking Vitamins C & E and Selenium can help reduce the risk of a future misscarriage. Is that true? If it is how much of each should be taken? I'm a 28 years old and healthy. This was my first misscarriage. I am trying to conceive again.

Dear Sue:
Many health providers recommend a multivitamin in ladies who are attempting to become pregnant. There is no evidence that this prevents miscarriage. There is strong evidence that folic acid 0.4 mg reduces the risk for a spine formation problem named open neural tube defect.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant: it has been promoted to protected against many problems, including the common cold. 100 mg daily is an effective dose and doses up to 1000 mg daily have no known risks.
Vitamine E is a second antioxidant and has an interaction with selenium. Dosage is 30 to 100 mg daily (1 mg = 1 IU). For selenium, doses of 100 ug/day are safe for children and adults.
These agents would do no harm: there is no science that supports miscarriage prevention.

Keywords: vitamins C and E, selenium
