Question Title: stomach flu and pregancyForum: The Maternal and Child Health Forum

Hi, Thank you in advance for taking my question. I have had the stomach flu for 6 days. I have had vomiting (no food but yellow gastric juice) and diarhea which has the same yellow bile present around it. I am experiencing extreme nausea. I can only eat foods such as crackers, apples, toast, gatorade and soup broth. I have also had a headache and achiness. My OB told me by phone I have the stomach flu and to call back if I am dehydrated. I am trying to get enough fluids. My question is I am 13 weeks pregnant. Will this hurt the pregnany at all? I have not been able to eat any protein and have only been able to take my vitamins that last two days. Will this hurt the developing baby at all? Thanks,
Dear Rae: Illness due to viruses that give gastrointestinal symptoms are very common. The risk in pregnancy is dehydration and high fever. In the absence of these effects, pregnancy is not harmed. The baby will take all the nutrition elements it requires from mom, even if that makes make anemic, vitamin deficient, or short of elements that support her weight and well-being. Babies have been called "perfect parasites." Keywords: flu, dehydration, diet This information is provide for education purposes and is not a medical consultation. If you have specific questions, please ask your healthcare provider.
