I recently underwent emergency surgery for a cornual ectopic preganancy that went undiagnosed by my ob/gyn. I was two weeks late for my period this past December and felt pregant but two EPT test were negative but I had a positive beta test with an HCG level of 132. Two weeks later I had severe pain and bleeding and my doctor diagnosed a miscarriage because he saw nothing in the uterus but then my beta came back at 8,000 and a sonogram showed a viable pregnancy with a heartbeat. One week following this I had bright red blood and went back to the doctor and a sonogram showed no heartbeat but the sac was still visible and e waited to see it I would pass it on my own (I was 10 weeks at this point) I did not pass it and a D & C was performed and the pathology report showed placental tissue. I continued to have problems (nausea, aching ovaries, tire and intermittent bleeding) My doctor felt they were the after effects of the D & C and that nothing was wrong. At three weeks I went to the doctor for pain on the left side and he diagnosed a functional cyst. One week later I had heavy bleeding, pain on the left and went to the emergency room where I had a positve beta test (39) event though I had no sex since conception of the pregnancy. I underwent surgery during which I was diagnosed with a cornual ectopic pregnancy and lost my left tube.
I am angry that it wasn't caught sooner but I am told that I am lucky. Do you have any theories on how this pregnancy started and progressed? Did I have flags that should have indicated that there was an underlying condition? How rare is a cornual ectopic pregnancy there is little information available? Is it possible that I had twins?

Dear Laura
Cornual pregnancy is exceedingly rare and can result in life-threatening complications such as uterine rupture. Although I certainly can understand your anger at what happened, the summary information that you provide suggests me that your clinical situation was complex and not at all straightforward.

My suggestion is that you schedule a visit with your provider and express the concerns that you have. Often, a meeting after an adverse event can give your provider a chance to explain the thought process behind her/his management of the clinical situation.
