Question Title: infertility

Forum: The Maternal and Child Health Forum
Topic: Pregnancy - Abnormal

I have endometriosis (grade 1) and spent over 5 years trying to get preganant but did eventually conceive on my own and had a healthy baby. I recently had a cornual ectopic pregnancy. What steps should I take in trying to conceive again once I am well. I lost the use of my ovary and tube.

Many would recommend a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) 6 weeks or so postoperatively to evaluate the patency of your remaining tube, since this is now going to be a critical factor in your ability to conceive spontaneously. If the tube is patent (open), I believe that it would be reasonable to attempt spontaneous conception for some fixed length of time (i.e. 6 months) before additional testing or therapy.

Recommendations are somewhat controversial if the remaining tube is obstructed. Some infertility specialists recommend surgical procedures to open or repair obstructed tubes, while others recommend going directly to assisted reproductive technology techniques such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). This decision is somewhat complex and many factors (your history of endometriosis, your partners sperm quality, your age, etc.) would need to be considered.
