Hi
I had a shot of Methotrexate last Monday after a diagnosis of suspected ectopic. The day before the shot, My hcg levels were at 2700. 4 days after the shot My levels are a little over 3,000. I had more blood drawn today.
Why would the levels rise? Is this common?

Thanks
Patty

Dear Patty:
hCG level can rise following methotrexate. The drug does not instantly kill the cells that produce the hormone, and these are rapidly growing cells. The pattern of change over time will determine whether a single dose of methotrexate is adequate treatment in your situation.

Keywords: hCG rise following methotrexate, ectopic pregnancy
