Question Title: Testing ProgesteroneForum: The Maternal and Child Health Forum
| |
|
I have read that the proper way to test for adequate levels of progesterone that could support a pregnancy is by doing an endometrial biopsy. Our doctor wants to test for progesterone in the blood on day 21 of my wife's cycle. 1) Is this method of testing as helpful as the endometrial biopsy? 2)What amount of prog. is sufficient or "normal" during the luteal phase? Dear Tom: Progesterone measure in the blood 5 to 9 days after ovulation is a screen for adequate luteal phase. The normal value is greater than 10 ng/ml. The "gold standard" is an endometrial biopsy. This test is "more invasive" than a blood test and thus may be reserved until all simpler tests have been shown normal or the progesterone level suggests a problem. Keyword: luteal phase defect This information is provided for general purposes only and is not a medical consultation. If you have specific questions, please contact your physician.
