Question Title: Nephrotic Syndrome/Uraic Cyst?

Forum: The Maternal and Child Health Forum
Topic: Childhood Disease

My daughter (age 2.5 years)was diagnosed with NS in May of this year '98.
She has recieved steriod treatment
and has been off the steroids for 3 weeks , she has been spilling between
1.0 and 3.0 on the sticks for 2weeks.
This has me concerned of course as I want her "better" without the
steriods. I have done some reading about this syndrome however any
information on the lastest treatment or known causes would be appreciated.
The second point of concern is somethig I have not been able to find
any info on , perhaps because I am not spelling it correctly.Shortly after
She was given the steriods 2/3 Days she developed a cyst, oval shape two
fingers or so below her belly button it was about 2inches x 1inch they( Dr.)
felt
it was a "URAIC" cyst? that filled as she started to release the fluid
build up from the NS. The cyst went down within a week or so although still
present it was very hard to detect (for me ) the Dr. assured me however
he could still feel it. Well, as she started spilling protien again in
the last week or so & the cyst is BACK it's rather large she has no weight
gain so therefore ( I would assume little to no fluid build up yet) so
why is this popped out again? what is this cyst? why does she have it?
have you heard of this before? what is the normal treatment if any????

Any info you have would be great . thanks

Dear Susan :

Thank you for your question

I think you are referring to a URACHAL CYST .
The urachus extends between the bladder and umbilicus(belly button). It is usually a remnant or a vestigial structure. It can persist in several forms , a urachal cyst , urachal diverticulum , urachal sinus or even a patent urachus.
the problem with urachal cysts is that they may become infected . They may present at any age as a swelling , pain or tenderness in the area above or below the umbilicus. If that happens to be the case , then exploration and drainage of the abscess will be necessary . Urachal cysts need to be differentiated from a patent urachus-pesrsitent omphalomesenteric duct ( usually a drainage from the umbilicus is evident).Ultrasonography or computed tomography ( CT scan)can be diagnostic.
