Forum: The Maternal and Child Health Forum
Topic: Pregnancy - Abnormal

what is the "usual" medical, social outcome for an infant who has experienced 10 weeks prematurity, 1700g weight at birth, apnea, respiratory distress and an IVH(intraventricular hemorrhage) grade two, while in NICU and step down. my role in the hypo is core evaluator for an early intervention program, all responses welcome

p.s. single parent household

___
Dear Patricia,
Thank you for your question. A 30 week infant with a grade II IVH
has only a 10 % risk of major disability such as spasticity, and
this is the same level of risk as an infant who has had no hemmorage.
But these children are at increased risk for learning problems at school.
An evaluation for early intervention is recommended, as well as continued
follow-up in a developmental assessment clinic.
