Prednisone and Breastfeeding

by Beca, Jun 07, 2003 12:00AM
Hello. I presently live in Japan where it is not popular to breastfeed. Due to an autoimmune disease, I have been on  about 5 mg or less of prednisone during my pregnancy. I need to know if it is safe to breastfeed while on 5 mg or less of prednisone? What dosage is considered safe, does anyone know? So far, all the doctors say is, they do not know. I find this difficult to believe since women with Lupus and RA have been giving birth and taking prednisone for over 20 years.

Can any one help me or point me in the right direction?

Thanks! Beca

I have been on predisone for over 12 years. I have one healty son and just learned that I was pregnant. My doctor told me it is not a med that can harm your unborn child, and  I don't think it is extracted in breast milk.

Dear Jen,

I have also been on prednisone for longer than I can remember. ( I am most probably much older than you as I am mid 40's  and have checked about prenatal time.)

IT IS FINE IN LOW DOSAGES PRENATAL AND IN FACT CAN STRENGTHEN THE BABY;S LUNGS.

What I can get an answer from doctors is regarding breastfeeding. I was told by one some does come through the milk as it enters the blood stream, etc. So it is whether it is safe for which I long for an answer
