ringworm?? eczema?? help!

by taysmommy, May 26, 2007 12:00AM
ok DD has had what i thought was a scratch for about a week now, and instead of going away its gotten redder and elevated, it looks like a circle (not a perfect one) but its got me worried, its looks dry and chaffy on the top, what could this be?

i know its hard to tell by a explanation, but i looked at pictures online of ringworm and of exzema and it resembled both, its not bad and hasnt spread yet, so if it is one of the two what kind of treatment do you use? its saturday so the doc will be closed until monday (im really not sure if i need to take her in or not, i probably will anyways because im paranoid lol)

any advise how to treat this?

ps. we dont have any cats or dogs, and she hasnt been near any, so i dont know where she would have picked up ringworm, but im stil concerned

it sounds like it could be ringworm. its round in shape, dark around the edges, it will be scaly in the center. it is easily transmitted from dirt as well as animals. using a cream for fungus will clear it up but it takes a few weeks. depending on age id call the pharmacist and make sure something like lamasil is ok .

don't panic if it is ringworm. it's very easy to treat, and also VERY easy to get. i have had it in the past, i never could say where i got it. basically, you can pick it up as easily as athlete's foot (similar fungus). if it's eczema, a thick moisturizer like eucerin would help soothe it. if it's ringworm, then on otc cream would work- lamisil or generic is fine. (same treatment cream as is used for athlete's foot and jock itch, if you're wondering where in the store to find it). i don't think you mention your dd's age... obviously read packaging to make sure it's ok for her age, but it should be OK. i gotta say, when i get something like that for several days and i'm not 100% sure what it is, i just go straight to treating it as if it's ringworm. within a couple of days it starts to fade.

sounds like ringworm. I have had it before and I got a perscription from the dr. If not you can use foot fungus creme and it works just as good.

thanks....im hoping its ringworm, i looked at pictures of exzema and it looks like it can get pretty severe, im going to the pharmacy later on today to get some cream, (DD is 15 months by the way) so im sure it will be fine, thanks again

perty- yes its in a circle shape, no dark ring around it so far, but it is looking on the scaley side,

is she in day care? I am a day care teacher and I picked it up from one of the kids. Its really itchy and it looks like a spider bite at first but the middle is soft.

mine little boy gets them too, it is eczema, the doctor always tells me to use hydrocortizone (sp?) or there is stuff called Aqua-something that is for this....I cannot remember the name.  They have never really gave him a prescription, except for one steriod cream.  Just b/c his is sparatic, one here, one there.....it may be a ringworm, but it really sounds like eczema to me from what you are describing

i had my mother in law and her sister(a retired nurse)  take a look at it, they both said it looks like neither, and its continuing to spread, so ill be taking her in on tuesday, my guess is still one of the two, but we will soon find out, for now im going to stick with the cream and just wait and see

oh my MIL also said it looks to her like a burn (no way DD could have a burn, she currently is at home with me all day since school is out, so its not from a day care)

ill post an update as soon as we find out just incase anyones curious, thanks for all the advise, you girls are wonderful!

wouldnt it be great to have a doctor in the family?
