Posted by lynn on May 18, 1999 at 15:31:23 my 14 year old daughter was diagnosed with major depression about 2 weeks ago. she was placed on zolft. my freind who is a nurse said that she thinks that she has borderline personality traits. she has alway been a loving daughter. can she really tell this disorder in the mist of the major depression crisis? my daughter became suicidal and heard voices. my freind said that the feeling that my daughter wanted to "hurt" her self is borderline. any help or hope? i'm scared for my daughter! plus is 2 weeks on the meds long enough? she seems only a little better.
Posted by HFHS.MD-AJ on May 21, 1999 at 13:02:07 Lynn, Suicidal thoughts and psychotic symptoms can be present in both Major Depression and Borderline Personality Disorder. These disorders often go hand in hand. In the midst of a depressive disorder, it may be difficult to diagnose borderline personality traits, especially in an adolescent. People may have thoughts of hurting or killing themselves in both disorders, so it is not a specific diagnostic feature. Zoloft is an effective antidepressant. Your daughter has only been on it for 2 weeks - it can take up to 4 to 6 weeks for her to start feeling the full benefits of the medication. I encourage you to discuss your concerns further with your daughter's treating physician/psychiatrist. This information is for general information only. Always contact your physician for any health concerns. Keywords: Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression
