I have been taking 50mg of paxil daily since November 1997, for
OCD, panic disorder and depression.
I would simply say that this was a miracle drug for me, it
gave me back my life. I suffered my first diagnosed panic
attack in 1986 from then until 1997, I had virtually no life,
I avoided food, restaurants, malls, etc. but I still managed to
work my daily job with great difficulty and used a lot of sick time. It got to the point in 1997 where I could not put anything in my mouth or I would panic, especially medication. I was admitted to hospital and given paxil under close supervision.

It worked and I feel great EXCEPT now my liver enzymes are elevated probably because of the paxil, and I may have to stop taking it, I don't want to stop the paxil but I do not want to be sick in other ways, what can I do? I don't want to lose life again.

Dear Denise,

I am glad that you are feeling better on Paxil. Placebo- controlled trials showed that patients treated with paxil showed abnormal values on liver function tests at no greater rate than seen in placebo treated patients. In elderly or debilitated petients with severe liver diseases, paxil is used but at a lower dosage.
I would recommend that you consult your physician for a thorough evaluation to rule out any other causes for your elevated liver enzymes and to discuss with your psychiatrist about other options that are available.
This information is provided for general educational purposes only and should not replace evaluation by a physician.

Key words: Paxil
