A Little Confused

by Anonymous, Oct 02, 1999 12:00AM
A few days ago I took an hour long nap. When I woke up I thought it was the next morning and I began my normal "get ready for work routine" worried that I was going to be late. When my daughter came down stairs to help cook dinner she asked what I was doing and tried to convince me it was still Wednesday night and not Thursday morning. It took more than ten minutes before I was convinced, and before I could remember that I had in fact just taken a nap.  Ever since the incident I have felt like I'm losing my mind and I'm afraid to go to sleep and have it happen again.I have been under quite a bit of stress lately so what I want to know is was the incident related to that, or am I having a problem with memory loss?

Anonymous,

The incident you describe is not that uncommon and is not necessarily indicative of a memory problem.  Stressful events, sleep deprivation and illness(cold, flu) can all trigger such an event.  If this is the only time you have had trouble with memory recently then do not be alarmed.  If its a recurrent event than you may benefit from a psychiatric evaluation to determine if there is a problem.  Good luck.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM
