Could this be Menapause?

by Carol, Oct 22, 1999 12:00AM
Just recently I went to my Dr. with complaints of mood swings and mind racing.  I would also think about money making ideas, things that I could do at home.  My children always pressure me about money so I just started thinking.

About 3 months ago I went off my Prempro because my breasts were growing, and they were already too big anyway.  Now I'm a 40DD.  This made me depressed.  I'm only 5ft.2 1/2. and my weight went up.  I have hypothyroidism and I'm being treated with synthroid.  Now after my complaints to the Dr. about my mind racing and too many pressures, she thinks I might be bi-polar. Now I'm on Depakote.  I have been for about 2 months.  I have terrible insominia, so therefore I'm also in a bad mood.  When I was diagnosed with Thyroid disease I was depressed and my cholesterol level was 360.  Dr. treated me with Paxil for my depression and synthroid for the hypothroid disease.  A couple of years later I started going through the change.  My symptoms for this were much like hypothyroidism.

I really don't feel that I'm Bi-Polar.  I just feel that I'm hormonally screwed up.  I shouldn't have gone off the Prempro or the Paxil.  Tell me what you think.

Carol,

The history that you relate is quite complicated, and it will be impossible for me to give you a diagnosis, without evaluating you. Mood swings, racing thoughts, and sleep disturbance may be due to psychiatric disorders (such as bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety, to name a few), or to medical illnesses such as hypothyroidism. It is not uncommon for medical and psychiatric disorders to co-exist. Some of your questions would be better answered by your primary care physician, gynecologist, or endocrinologist. You may also find it helpful to consult a psychiatrist for thorough mental health evaluation. Questions about bipolar disorder and depression have been dealt with in our forum on many occasions. You may wish to refer to our archives for more information.
