My Son

My son came to live with me 7 Yrs. ago, he's had very upsetting problems such as , Thinking people are spying on him, he takes

all things that are electrical apart to see if there is a camera in them, he thinks everyone is out to get him, and plotting against him, he now claims to here voices, he wants to and sometimes does live homeless. He can't keep a job because of these problems. I lived in another state for 2 Yrs. and he told

me he would see people from where we came from, that they were following him. He has bad days and good days, if things are going right for him its a good day. He also often talks to himself outloud, he doesn't care who hears him. My main concern is how to get him some help, I'm on a disability and don't have no money to seek him some help. How can I get someone help if they think nothing is wrong? How can I get him commited to an institution for some help? I'm very desperate.

Patricia,

It appears that your son may have a psychotic disorder that would benefit from treatment.  I would encourage him to go for a psychiatric evaluation and if he defers you may petition the courts to have him evaluated.  In order for a person to be committed to treatment(hospitalization) against their will they need to have impairment in caring for themselves and/or at risk of harming themselves or others as a result of this impairment.

You need to file a petition with the courts in the county in which your son resides.  Each county has a Community Mental Health system which provides care for those who are uninsured or have medicaid.  I hope this was helpful.  Good luck with this difficult and common problem.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM
