Can Pamelor be as effective as Elavil when used for chronic pain

I have a pelvic floor muscle spasm problem and had tried Elavil; I could not tolerate the side effects even at only 10mg.  My Dr suggested Pamelor and so far no side effects--I have taken it for a week now at a 10mg dose. Wondering if Pamelor is as effective as Elavil for chronic pain and how long does it usually take to notice any difference?

Yes, both drugs are from the same family and should have the same effect.
