Difficulty in verbalising, reading, loss of libido

by Aphasiapluslibido, Aug 22, 2006 12:00AM
I am  in my late twenties, male, and have recently (2 - 3 months) experienced a strange difficulty in speaking; specifically I will use a completely wrong word for some everyday object or activity. The wrong word will be the same type of word as the word I mean to use, i.e. verb for verb, noun for noun and I will generally correct myself quickly after saying it. Further, in the same timeframe, I have become extremely forgetful. I will often leave personal property (wallet, phone, briefcase) behind me, particularly when in a restaurant or other public place, but not so much e.g. when leaving the house. Until I noticed these symptoms myself my memory and accuracy when speaking were two characteristics which my colleagues and friends often commented on as being exceptional. Further, I find myself often reading the wrong word when reading for pleasure or work. I will generally notice this at the completion of a sentence or paragraph. I notice as well that I often now have to read and re-read a paragraph to understand fully its meaning. I notice one or two incidences of these symptoms most days.

Finally, in the same timeframe I have almost completely lost my libido and have no real desire to have sexual relations. My partner has commented adversely on this.

These symptoms are causing me difficulty and embarrassment. Your advice would be appreciated.

What you describes suggests you are distracted by some very important below the surface issues and agendas you have not been able to surface and sort out.  I suggest you have a consultation with a good therapist and start talking about what is on your mind that is trying to break through.

you know something, my middle son has similar problems and he hates it (he's 15 so I won't comment on the libido thing) but he was diagnosed with ADD and has taken medication for it in the past, but he stopped because he couldn't stay awake (made him extremely tired and changed his personality a lot; it made him depressed and when he would come home from school all he wanted to do was sleep) so we stopped the medication and are dealing with his ADD with counseling and lots of prompting and positive reinforcements.

He makes mistakes in his speach regularly, that's why I found it fascinating that you mentioned the same thing. And he has incredible difficulty taking tests at school because of his reading and mis-reading of words. He was tested for dyslexia, and he doesn't have it. And he also didn't have a sudden onset of symptoms like you described is happening to you, but I just wanted you to know that someone else is struggling with similar things you talked about and it was robbing him of a normal teenage life; but with counseling and forethought before he speaks he is doing much better and he is Blessed with good friends who love him and understand him no matter what.

take care and I hope you find the answers you are looking for.
