Question Title: Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and restless leg syndromeForum: Neurology Forum
| |
Hi I'm looking for some creative ideas to help a 10 year old boy with Duchenne Muscular dystrophy and restless leg syndrome to get a good night's sleep. He's non mobile with less than grade three strength . Beth = The combimation of problems you mention is unique in my experience and has not been reported in the literature in the past 30 years. As regards therapy for restless legs this is pharmacological, I am not aware if you have already tried medication or if by creative you mean something other than drug therapy, but all of the management strategies in the literature refer to drug therapy. A wide variety of drugs have been reported to help with this problem, they include the sedative drugs, Temazepam and Clonazepam, the anticonvulsants Carbamazepine and Neurontin, opiods (narcotics) and the anti-parkinsonian drugs : levedopa, pramipexole and pergolide. Reviewing the literature on this question the most recent and interesting new information related to the use of the anti-parkinsonian drug PERGOLIDE at low doses, which seems to have been tried recently with considerable success in some trials, and NEURONTIN which is a new anticonvulsant , notable for its extremely low incidence of side effects.
