Question Title: Headache/Fever after LP

Forum: Neurology Forum
Topic: Neuromuscular

Hi,

I have a question that i would like to ask of you. After a lp is done (last friday), what would cause fever up to 101, headaches even when lying down, low to normal white count, and a little high on the red count on a blood test. Seeing gray at times, breaking into a hot sweat then cold sweat, blurred or fuzzy vision, off balance, can't think straight, etc. They have ruled out infection from the blood work i gave you, but this is rather bothersom, as I would rather go to work. If this is inflamation of the brain due to lowered csf, how long will the fever, and all the other symptoms last? drinking mountain dew, coffee, fluids, etc.

Thank you for your time.

Dear Aradia,
thank you for the question. Post LP headache is not uncommon, but fever is unusual. A second LP maybe needed to rule out infection.
If the second lp is normal (no increase white cell or bacteria seen in the csf) then you may have sterile meninigitis. This needs to be differentiated from bacterial meningitis or viral meningitis. Bacterial meningitis, the result of introduction of bacteria by the LP needle, must be treated promptly. If the fever and headache persists, you should contact your doctor.

I hope the above information helps. Good luck.
